If your bike has been hanging in the garage since November, it’s probably ready for a little attention before you put real miles on it. Here’s what actually happens during a tune-up at Shifting Gears — and why it’s worth doing before the season kicks off.
The Once Over (Free, No Appointment Needed)
Not sure where to start? Bring it in. We’ll check it over at no charge and tell you exactly what it needs. No pressure, no guesswork. This is a good first step if your bike has been sitting a while and you’re not sure what shape it’s in.
Annual Tune-Up
An annual tune-up covers the things that affect how your bike rides and, more importantly, how well it stops. That includes:
- Brakes: pads, cables, and lever adjustments
- Shifting: front and rear derailleurs, cable tension, indexing
- Wheels: true, spoke tension, and a check of the hubs
- Chain and drivetrain: wear, cleanliness, and lubrication
- Tires: pressure and condition
- Bolts and contact points: seat, handlebars, pedals
We adjust what’s adjustable, lube what needs lubrication, and flag anything that needs more attention.
Why Spring Is the Right Time
Cables stretch over a season. Brake pads wear down. Chains accumulate grit. None of this is dramatic, it’s just how bikes work. A once-a-year check catches the small stuff before it becomes the expensive stuff. A worn chain, for example, is a $30 fix. Let it go too long, and it starts eating through your cassette. That’s a $150+ repair.
Getting your bike sorted in early spring also means you’re not waiting in line in May when everyone suddenly wants to ride. 🙂
